Key endorsement from “Houston’s Pastor” reflects growing momentum of Hollins campaign
HOUSTON, TX – Today, Houston civil rights legend Rev. William A. Lawson endorsed Chris Hollins to be the next Mayor of Houston. In the first major endorsement for the Hollins campaign, Rev. Lawson cited Chris’s moral courage and commitment to family and faith.
“I’m proud to endorse Chris Hollins to be the next Mayor of Houston. Leadership must meet the challenge of its day, and Chris met that challenge during the pivotal 2020 Election by fending off callous attempts to suppress Houston voters,” said Rev. Lawson. “We’ve witnessed Chris’s toughness and tenacity when democracy was on the line, and I can personally attest to his commitment to family and faith. As our city’s challenges continue to evolve, Chris has the moral courage and vision to lead Houston forward.”
“I’m humbled to earn the endorsement of Rev. William A. Lawson, ‘Houston’s Pastor’ and beloved community trailblazer. Rev. Lawson spent decades championing civil rights and laying the moral foundation for Houston to blossom into America’s most diverse city,” said Hollins. “As grassroots enthusiasm for our campaign grows, we’re excited to have Rev. Lawson’s support to pave an equitable path for Houston’s future.”
Rev. Lawson’s endorsement comes on the heels of a historic early fundraising effort for the Hollins campaign. During the first reporting period for the 2023 Houston mayoral race, Hollins raised $1.1 million in cash contributions, fueled by more than 2,400 contributions from roughly 1,700 individual donors. More than 1,500 of the contributions to the campaign were $100 or less.
The number of donors, total contributions, and small-dollar contributions to the Hollins campaign each set new records for any reporting cycle in a Houston mayoral race.
