Houston mayoral candidate Chris Hollins released the following statement urging the Texas Legislature to stand with teachers and support House Bill 1548:

“Teachers play an important role in helping students develop and reach their full potential. As a proud brother of two Houston-area educators, I’ve seen how hard teachers work and believe we have an obligation to compensate them appropriately, especially given the $33 billion budget surplus. 

“I applaud State Rep. James Talarico for introducing HB 1548, which recognizes the profound impact that raising teacher pay will have on improving student outcomes. If Texas is serious about attracting and retaining high quality educators, I urge lawmakers to stand with teachers and support HB 1548.”
